Dr Richa Sharma

Dr Richa Sharma is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist with fellowship training in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus as well as General Ophthalmology and Medical Retina. She provides comprehensive eye care to patients across all age groups, combining broad clinical expertise with a compassionate, patient-centred approach.

Dr Sharma obtained her MBBS from the University of Pune, India, and completed her postgraduate training MS in Ophthalmology at a busy public hospital in Western India. During this time, she gained extensive experience in general ophthalmology and developed strong surgical skills across a wide range of ophthalmic procedures.

She undertook a Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Brisbane, under the mentorship of Professor Glen Gole, followed by a General Ophthalmology and Medical Retina Fellowship at the Queensland Eye Institute and Mater Hospital, Brisbane.

Dr Sharma was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in 2018. She is an active member of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO). Over the past two decades, she has worked across multiple Queensland hospitals,
including Gold Coast University Hospital, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Mater Hospital, and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

She currently works as a Visiting Medical Officer (Consultant Ophthalmologist) at Queensland Children’s Hospital and Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Dr Sharma is passionate about medical education and is actively involved in teaching ophthalmology registrars and medical students. She regularly presents at national and international ophthalmology conferences and remains engaged in clinical research.

Dr Sharma offers comprehensive ophthalmic care with special interests in cataract, pterygium, glaucoma, and medical retina, including macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, and diabetic retinopathy in adults. She also provides the full spectrum of paediatric ophthalmology services.

She is a highly skilled ophthalmic surgeon, performing cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), pterygium excision with auto conjunctival graft, strabismus surgery, and a range of minor ophthalmic procedures.

Known for her warm and attentive manner, Dr Sharma is a compassionate clinician who values listening to her patients and delivering holistic, evidence-based care. She is multilingual and fluent in English, Hindi, and Marathi. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and has a keen interest in the outdoors, music, pickleball and yoga.
